Consulting
IVRI has been very active in consulting with industry from its inception in the mid 1990’s. Major initiatives include a collaborative relationship with G.D. Searle (now acquired by Pfizer) in the late 1990’s during which a couple of Searle factories were designed using virtual reality and a collaborative relationship with Industrial Virtual Reality, Inc. in early 2000’s during which a number of industrial problems were analyzed and novel open source software such as VisualWord and VisualAssembly were designed, and novel hardware systems such as iC3D (www.ivri.com) and ImmersiveTouch (www.immersivetouch.com) were conceived and developed.
Example 1:
Our research through VisualAssembly developed insights into loading large Caterpillar CAD data sets for use in virtual reality applications

A complete vehicle CAD data set e.g. Caterpillar 980H wheel loader presents challenges for loading it into the memory of a typical high-end graphics PC workstation. For example, prominent commercially available solutions such as ProEngineer and Unigraphics JT Open were not able load and open such large data files on a high end graphics PC with 3 GB of RAM running under Windows OS as of December 2004. Some of our research insights were communicated to UGS and were implemented in UGS JT Open 1.2.
Example 2:
In collaboration with UIC College of Dentistry and Sensable Technologies, Inc. we are developed insights into Real-time Lateral Collision Detection.
Almost all the real-time collision detection work has concentrated on point to object collision detection, which makes it difficult to detection collision between two or more convex objects occurring orthogonal to the direction of approach at any given point in time. Such situations are common in detecting proper contact between probes or instruments and in designing a proper collision response in many haptics simulations. Based on a network of collaborators of Sensable Technologies Inc., we are identifying a commercially viable solution to this problem.
