“Even though we could see the 3D anatomy, we could never interact with it – the patient’s 3D anatomy was trapped in a 2D surface of the display screen. ImmersiveView allows us to cross that glass barrier into the other side, into a different universe where we can interact with the anatomy.  It gives for the first time the surgeon the ability touch and to have depth perception.”

-Pravin K. Patel, M.D. Chief of Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery at the Craniofacial Center at the University of Illinois Heath & Medical Science Center and Chicago Shriners Hospitals for Children.

ImmersiveTouch Clinical Studies

Accuracy of Ventriculostomy Catheter Placement using VR Simulators with Haptic Feedback

Study findings support the ImmersiveTouch simulator’s ability to realistically reproduce the ventriculostomy surgical experience.

Using Virtual Reality Surgical Simulators for Cataract Surgical Skill Assessments

Capsulorhexis performance and specific performance variables -- circularity, accuracy, fluency, and overall score -- all trended towards or showed statistically significant improvement after training on the ImmersiveTouch simulator.

Augmented Reality Haptic Simulators Improves Residents’ Ability to Perform a Ventriculostomy

Free-hand success rate of first-pass ventricle cannulation six months prior to a practice session on the ImmersiveTouch simulator was 12%. One month after said practice session, the success rate jumped to 32%.

Virtual Reality Cerebral Aneurysm Clipping Simulation with Real-Time Haptic Feedback

Based on survey results assessing an early model of the ImmersiveTouch simulator, 67% of participants felt that the 3D anatomical details on the simulator bore close resemblance to real operative anatomy, and 33% felt the simulator provided very realistic haptic feedback for aneurysm surgery. Overall, residents felt simulator use would be a valuable way to train for aneurysm cases.

Percutaneous Spinal Fixation Simulation with Virtual Reality and Haptics

Results showed that percutaneous needle placement performance -- measured by average target distance, average fluoroscopy exposure, and average overall score -- improved from the practice session to the test session on the ImmersiveTouch simulator.

Learning Retention of Thoracic Pedicle Screw Placement using Augmented Reality Simulators with Haptic Feedback

Study results indicate that the use of the ImmersiveTouch simulator, due to its graphic and haptic capabilities, is a realistic and viable surgical training method.

A Novel Virtual Reality Simulator for Hemostasis in a Brain Surgical Cavity

96.2% of residents consider the ImmersiveTouch simulator somewhat or very useful in improving hand-eye coordination, and 94% of residents consider use of the ImmersiveTouch simulator to be a beneficial way to improve depth perception and general operating room skills.

“IVSP is an integrated suite of software solutions that places the diagnostic radiologist within the anatomic framework of their patient. It creates an interactive space that provides a visual pathway for achieving optimal patient care.”

-Richard Monahan, D.D.S., M.S., maxillofacial radiologist for the Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Team at Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago.
