What is ImmersiveView Surgical Planning (IVSP™)?

ImmersiveView Surgical Planning (IVSP™), is a platform that generates high-fidelity 3D VR replicas from patient DICOM scan data and provides a variety of tools for use directly on the model in VR. This allows surgeons to study, assess, and plan their surgeries, collaborate intra-operatively with their surgical team, better educate patients about their upcoming surgery, and provide the most advanced level of care available today.


IVSP is simple to use.

First, upload patient scan data onto the online ImmersiveTouch upload form. Then, an ImmersiveView™ file containing the patient 3D VR model is generated and sent back to the uploader for use on their personal IVSP™ platform. The IVSP™ platform processes the ImmersiveView™ file, and within seconds the surgeon is able to view the 3D VR model and make use of the technology.

IVSP™ is compatible with the Oculus Rift VR system, which is included with the platform.


IVSP is equipped with a number of useful surgical planning tools.

With Oculus Rift hand controllers, users are easily able to perform a number of functions on the patient model.

IVSP Control Tool

VR hand controllers allow users to move the 3D model in any way they’d like. Rotate, draw, cut, zoom, and scale the model quickly and intuitively.

IVSP Cut Tool

The patient model can be sliced through freely at any angle to explore the cross-sectional anatomy. With this tool, there are no barriers to model visualization.

IVSP Opacity Tool

Control the transparency of specific portions of the anatomy, like the bones, organs, or blood vessels.

IVSP Draw Tool

Draw on the patient model to identify important anatomical landmarks for more efficient surgical planning. Given the VR platform, users can easily mark in 3D.


Visualize the uploaded patient 2D scans over the 3D VR model while viewing the cross sectional anatomy.

IVSP Measure Tool

Record and measure useful distances and angles directly on the VR model.

Visualization. ImmersiveView™, a software included within the IVSP™ platform, quickly generates 3D VR models from uploaded patient scan data. This patient model is useful both before surgery, as a reference for surgeons while they prepare for their cases, and during surgery, as a guidance tool for the surgeon and his or her surgical team. Being able to transform 2D data into fully realized 3D VR data allows surgeons to grasp valuable insight into each patient case.

Case planning. Tools built into the IVSP™ platform allow surgeons to review and study their cases. The ability to directly mark important details on the interface, view cross sectional anatomy, and superimposed 2D scans over the anatomical model, among other tools, allows surgeons to create a clear surgical plan. Additionally, the IVSP™ interface makes it incredibly easy for members of a surgical team to collaborate in person or via video conferencing.

Case consultation. The IVSP™ platform offers a multitude of add-on services that further personalize the technology for each surgeon. Our team of biomedical engineers offers personal consultations with surgeons where design accommodations for unique surgical cases can be discussed. We also offer additional modules and services, such as our ImmersiveModeler software, 3D printed cutting guides and splints, and MRI segmentation, depending on the necessities of each case.


IVSP benefits different types of specialties.

Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) Surgery

Involving an extremely visible portion of the body, CMF surgeries require careful consideration before implementation. No two CMF surgeries are the same given the variable anatomy and condition of each patient. IVSP™ is an invaluable tool for surgeons to understand each patient case fully, to simulate possible surgical outcomes, to design the necessary splints and guides for surgery, and to provide the best patient care possible.



IVSP™ can be used for a wide range of neurosurgery procedures — from craniotomies and ventriculostomies, to aneurysm clippings and conjoined twins separations — acting as an insightful guide into the brain. The intricacies of the neuro-anatomy are easily captured in the 3D VR model, and the platform allows neurosurgeons to gain a full perspective on their cases while preparing for surgery, and also acts as a useful road map during surgery.  


Spine Surgery

IVSP™ technology is able to help spine surgeons study their patient cases to a degree not possible before. Hardware placements in the spine and spinal deformities are easily visualized, making it less likely for minute details of the anatomy to be missed when planning for surgery. IVSP™ can also be used post-op to review the case and address future care for the patient.


Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) Surgery

IVSP™ addresses the need for clear visualization during ENT surgeries. With complete control, ENT surgeons can explore the anatomy of the ears, nose, and throat, measure key anatomical structures, and understand the path to be taken during surgery.


Cardiothoracic Surgery

Cardiothoracic surgeons greatly benefit from the visualization capabilities of IVSP™. Blockages in blood flow and irregularities of the thoracic cavity can be accurately identified in a 3D VR model, and minimally invasive surgeries can be mapped out on the patient specific model.
